Don’t just fight the system…burn it.

Since discovering she is a shape-shifting, fire-breathing dragon on her sixteenth birthday (surprise!), Bryn McKenna’s world has been thrown into chaos. Being a “crossbreed”—part Red dragon and part Blue—means Bryn will never fit in. Not with dragon society. Not with the archaic and controlling Directorate. And definitely not when she has striped hair and a not-so-popular affection for rule-breaking…

But sneaking around with her secret boyfriend, Zavien, gets a whole lot harder when he’s betrothed to someone else. Someone who isn’t a mixed breed and totally forbidden. And for an added complication, it turns out Bryn’s former archnemesis Jaxon Westgate isn’t quite the evil asshat she thought. Now she’s caught between her desire to fit in and a need to set things on fire. Literally.

Because if Bryn can’t adapt to the status quo…well, then maybe it’s time for her to change it.

what i thoughtI received a copy in exchange for an honest review from the publisher. It does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Wow, this was 10x better than the first! I’m so glad the writing improved and the overall story! I actually had difficultly putting the book down, I was completely immersed in this story!!!
This immediately picks up where the first book left off. Bryn may be accepted by her grandparents, but people still aren’t accepting her. The threats to Bryn are still coming and people still want her dead. But she’s not the only one they want dead. After finding out who Bryn can really trust, something devastating happens to her and it completely changes her life. Even with this big change, she can’t seem to catch a break between all these death threats. Trying to make the best of her Christmas, she spends a lot of time with her grandparents and her knight, Valmont.
I was honestly very nervous going into this book because of my overall thoughts on the first book. This was soo much better! In my review for the first book, I had pointed out the amount of times Bryn’s under garments were described in detail; luckily that only happens maybe twice in the book! Bryn’s character does a complete 180 and becomes a character I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved her sarcastic attitude the most.
I’m interested in how this romance will develop and who she will chose. Though I REALLY like Valmont, I do like Jaxon as well. In the first book, I was still undecided who I wanted Bryn to choose, but Zavien was also in the mix. Obviously I despise his character now and absolutely hate him.
I’m sad to say that we don’t get much of Ivy and Clint who are Bryn’s best friends. Because of what happens to Bryn and the constant threats, she is staying with her grandparents.

This had a lot more action and more drama, which I think made it very interesting and what kept me reading. I had no idea what was going to happen and I was constantly wanting to know what was going to happen! This does end in a cliffhanger, which stinks. But I think the third book is going to be even better and I’m excited to see who Bryn ends up with; kind of hoping for Valmont! :)

quotes

“I want to be with someone I love, not someone the Directorate deems as my compatible mate.”

“Good.” He looked up. “Then there’s only one suitable answer.”

“What?”

“This.” He leaned in, giving her time to back out if she wasn’t interested. Did she want him to kiss her? Hell, yes. Was it wrong? Right now it didn’t feel wrong. Letting her eyes flutter shut, she moved toward him; his warm breath feathered across her lips and–

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Startled, Bryn jerked backward.

“Of all the lousy timing.” — Bridges Burned, Chris Cannon
