When a bestselling debut novel from mysterious author J.Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an adjunct writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled literary career and a bumpy long-term relationship, Emiline isn’t thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio.

That’s because the novel is patterned on Emiline’s own dark and desperate childhood, which means that “J. Colby” must be Jase: the best friend and first love she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she can put her mind at ease is to find and confront “J. Colby,” but is she prepared to learn the truth behind the fiction?

what i thought

This was my second book I’ve read by Renee Carlino and so far this is my favorite. This quickly became an all time favorite book for me and will most likely make it onto my top reads of this year. This is so different from typical NA romance books. Renee Carlino is a fantastic writer if you are not familiar with her books…

I love the whole story behind this. It’s a book within a book. How the story unfolds and how our main character, Emiline finds herself as well as learning about her past in one of the most COOLEST ways!

Who doesn’t love second chance romances?! I EAT THOSE UP! Second chances make some of the sweetest stories ever because of the relationship in the beginning – I just find them the best. I love that the characters have known each other pretty much their entire lives, became best friends, hung out with each other, grew up together, E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G.

I always find writing reviews for books that I absolutely adore are the hardest to write. There’s nothing to pick at because it was all done PERFECTLY. All I want to do is just gush about this book. It’s very difficult to find the right words to fully describe my love for this book!

Renee has such a unique writing style – it’s just so pretty!
Have I convinced you to buy a copy yet? Seriously… This book is just gush-worthy. Everything about this is just gorgeous!!!!!

From the author of Maybe in Another Life—named a People Magazine pick and a “Best Book of the Summer” by Glamour and USA Today—comes a breathtaking new love story about a woman unexpectedly forced to choose between the husband she has long thought dead and the fiancé who has finally brought her back to life.

In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure.

On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.

Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.

That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.

Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly?

Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

what i thoughtI absolutely loved this book! This is now my second book by Taylor and another one I’ve absolutely loved. I love her writing style and how she creates stories. It’s nothing like I’ve read before and that’s what makes her stick out among others.

This book made me nervous with the 2 paths Emma could take. Emma married her high school sweetheart, but on their first anniversary he disappears and is presumed dead. Jesse and Emma wanted to get away from Massachusetts, but now a widow, she goes back home. She runs into someone she used to go to school with, Sam. They get engaged not soon after. Jesse is found and wants to be back with Emma. Now torn between her husband and fiance, she has to choose who she wants to be with. But find herself also; she’s lost who she was and is struggling to figure out who she is.

Once introduced to both male characters and getting sides of the story, I picked one guy almost immediately.  I don’t want to spoil it and give away who, so I’ll leave it as a mystery. :) The whole book made me nervous because I wasn’t sure what her ultimate decision would be. You have no idea who she’s going to pick in the end because she loves both men with her whole heart.

I love how this book was laid out and how the story was told. Like I said, I love Taylor’s writing style. She’s quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. This book toys with your emotions and if you’ve read any of Taylor’s I’m sure it’s the same emotions. Be prepared to have your heart strings pulled at!

It seems the things worth keeping are often the hardest to hold…

KAI

I had two things in life that mattered. My mother and my music.
Mama was taken from me too soon, and now music is all I have left. It’s the thing that’s pushed me right out of backwoods Georgia into Los Angeles, where the line between fantasy and reality shimmers and blurs. I’m finally making my way, making my mark. I can’t afford to fall for one of music’s brightest stars. Not now. Music is all I have left, and I’m holding on tight with both hands. I won’t let go, not even for Rhyson Gray.

RHYSON

I had one thing in my life that mattered – music. The only constant, it’s taken me to heights most people only dream about; a gift dropped in my lap at birth. I thought it was enough. I thought it was everything until I met Kai. Now she’s all I think about, like a song I can’t get out of my head. If I have to chase her, if I have to give up everything – I will. And once she’s mine, I won’t let go.

RHYSON

She doesn’t wear my ring.
We never stood before a preacher.
The only vows exchanged were between our bodies; between our souls.
But she was mine and I was hers until I ruined it. I have to believe that every day, every step, every breath brings me closer to making things right.
To making her mine again.

KAI

I’ve seen promises broken.
I know love makes no guarantees.
But things were different for Rhys and me, until he lied, and I walked away. Only there’s a chain between our hearts that I can’t break. Even if I forgive him, a shadow from my past hangs over us; over this love that reaches all the way down to my soul.

what i thought

BOOK 1:

Words cannot describe how much I LOVED Rhyson!!! Tears never stopped. A lot were happy tears, some weren’t. Kennedy has such a gorgeous writing style and the background Kai comes from just brought tears to my eyes multiple times. The way it was told and what certain characters would do, it was just a constant flow of tears! I loved the characters she created, especially our 2 main characters. I don’t want to give too much away from the plot and spoil anything which is why that sounds extremely vague, but once they start occurring, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Kennedy’s writing is gorgeous and I’m beyond excited to read more from her. She’s definitely working in to one of my favorite authors because of her writing.

The ending, that could go another way… Just to be warned for those that haven’t read this, it does have a pretty big cliffhanger. It’s one of those that you just have to know IMMEDIATELY what happened and figure out how they will get through it because obviously they will right? If not, that’s cool. I’ll take Rhys. ;) So just keep in mind that if you want to read this, make sure you have the sequel downloaded and ready to begin immediately after finishing the first. Trust me.

BOOK 2:

I loved this sequel. It immediately picks up where the first ended. Perfect sequel (even better than the first) and STUNNING ending to this addicting duology!

You get so attached to these characters and what is going on that you just want to reach through your Kindle and scream and tell them they are making the wrong decision! Rhys has definitely made it into my list of top book boyfriends – his character and his personality was to die for and you can’t help but fall in love with him.

What I really like most I guess about Kai and Rhys’ relationship, despite all the drama and secrets that came along with the two (let’s just ignore that for the sake of this comment) how well they communicate with each other. I know you’re probably wondering why I would say that after saying the drama and secrets that come between the couple, but despite all that, their interactions is what really drew me. Yes, they had secrets and weren’t always honest. But the way they communicated with each other is different from a lot of books I read (maybe I just didn’t pay much attention as I did in this one). But I truly felt they communicate fairly well.

COMBINED THOUGHTS:

I’m praying there’s a 3rd book- that just being me. It wraps up nicely, but being the absolute hardcore romance addict I am, I always want more to a couples’ story. Maybe even like a novella or something…. ;) I need more!!!!! Like I mentioned, Kennedy’s writing is so gorgeous you get swept away while reading. It’s one of those series (or even just standalones) where the outside world (AKA real world) doesn’t mean a DANG thing. I’m really looking forward to diving into her other books she has out already as well as any new books in the future.

This duology brings all the feels. I’m sure it’s noticeable in the way my review it written – based on emotions. You might cry, laugh, get mad/frustrated, and swoon. The passion and strong feelings between Rhys and Kai is epic for better terms. I cannot stress how fast I fell in love with their story.

Gush time…- I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK. EVERY. DANG. MINUTE. BEAUTIFUL!

Hate… Anger… Distrust… it fed the animal.
Status… Money… Power it’s all women want.
Never yield… Never give them a piece of who you are.
These were the ideals that Seth Montgomery had lived with since he was a child. After his mother abandoned their family for another man, the same man who took everything from Seth’s father, Seth’s life turned dark. He’d never give a woman all that control. He’d never give them the satisfaction of destroying his heart.
Tiffany Webster had been falling in love with one man for the past three years. Her boss’s best-friend. The day Seth walked into her bar, the day his steel blue eyes met hers, she was hooked. But, Seth Montgomery was unattainable, and only into one night hook-ups with a certain type of girl. A girl Tiffany was not.
Tiffany was the one girl Seth had ever considered breaking his rules for, but swore he’d never corrupt.
Until one night… when everything fell apart… and hidden truths surfaced.
When your past hurts so much it makes it hard to breathe and your heart ache, what else can you do? What path should you take to feel something, trust someone again?
Two hearts… two souls… align…
One shift… one break… and you’re falling.
Feel this… trust this…Survive this.

what i thoughtI received a finished copy in exchange for an honest review from the author. It does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I swear, this lady is too talented with writing it’s unbelievable. I loved Seth since he was introduced. He was such an interesting side character and very mysterious. I was so excited to read his story and of course learn more about Tiffany!

Seth doesn’t give women control; they just want the money and power anyway. His parents have destroyed him and still dealing with his father. Tiffany has been falling for a man everyday for the past 3 years but he doesn’t seem to notice. Neither Seth or Tiffany have great pasts – it’s destroyed the 2. Can Seth end his one-night stands for Tiffany? Can Tiffany let him in and fully trust him? Or will they let their pasts corrupt them completely from ever letting love in?

I loved their story and to say how excited I am for Colby and Cam (characters we meet in Still Life who continue to make appearances throughout the books) is an understatement. I have grown sooo incredibly close to these characters, I can’t believe after Cam and Colby’s novella, it will be over… All these characters hold a place in my heart.

Seth and Tiffany take on a new level of dark. Yes, Still Life and Still Water had their moments, but this takes on a new level of dark. Tiffany has lost all that she loved because of a mistake she made as a teenager. Seth never really had parents growing up and it has affected all his future relationships with girls. How these 2 tried to make it past these big bumps in their pasts completely broke me.

I know I probably say this a lot, but I’m serious. With Mrs. Johnson’s writing and understanding all these characters, I have completely fallen for all of them. Todd is still my favorite and he’s the one that surprised me the most. Loved Tiff and Seth. Loved this book. Love A.M. Johnson. Love this series. Love everything with this series! :)

what i thought

I received a finished copy in exchange for an honest review from the author. It does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

If there’s one character who can completely redeem themselves and become a top book boyfriend, that’s King Todd Dixon.

Todd is trying to get over Elizabeth, his childhood love. Getting over her and what he did to her is something he is truly struggling with. If it wasn’t for Seth and he’s coaxing him to move away, he would have crumbled to his self-hatred for what he did.

Lily has music flowing her veins; always has. But when the most important thing in her life leaves her, she is forced to try and move on. She’s now living with her sister and is just moving along. When Todd becomes her boss, the two can’t ignore how strong their connection is.

After finishing Still Life, I was truly worried I wouldn’t like Todd’s character after what happened. Woah, was I wrong COMPLETELY! I fell very hard for Todd and I’m shocked at how much I do love his character. It did take a while for me to completely grow on him, but when a certain situation was thrown at him… The way he handled it? Stole my dang heart. There’s certain guys like Todd, who just have that winning touch over me. I don’t want to go into too much detail and spoil what happens. But when you read the book, you might catch on to where I was going with that.

Lily is just such an awesome character. Both of these characters, Lily and Todd, just blew my mind. How they handled the situations thrown at them blew me away. Yes, at times I wanted to just reach through my book and yell at them.

A.M. Johnson has easily become a favorite author for me. Her writing is seriously fantastic and I can’t get enough.

Loss… a word Elizabeth Haddington knows only too well. Despite the tragedies she’s endured, she’s been able to rise from the adversity she’s faced and begin her life again. Being a self-assured and strong woman, she knows she doesn’t need anyone to make her whole.

Hate, pain, and twisted memories are all Sawyer Bryant’s ever known. He’d slowly lost who he was and what he should’ve become. His only escape was the military… Eight years later, as an ex-Navy SEAL, he’s forced to confront his father and their disturbed and violent past.

Then one day, his life is turned upside down, when he glimpses a woman singing in her car at a set of traffic lights. Thinking he’d never see her again, amazingly he finds her performing with her band at the local bar. This chance encounter brings these two lost souls together. Once Sawyer gets a taste of her melodic voice, there’s no turning back.

For Elizabeth, when she meets Sawyer… she realizes she’s fallen hard. But is this really love she’s feeling or does love build slowly over time?

What happens when fate turns things around on you, creates flashes you can’t turn from… moments that will shape your life?
They are faced with the choice of darkness surrounding them or to rid themselves of the guilt and pain and move toward the light.

This story is about life’s moments. How they can make you or break you, and one man’s hope that… Love, won’t judge him.

what i thoughtI received a finished copy in exchange for an honest review from the author. It does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

My sister always pointed this out in the Harry Potter movies. if you look at the intros, you can tell how darker they go. Sorcerer’s Stone is light and happy, then by Deathly Hallows it’s dark and dreary and you know something major is going to happen… This is basically Still Life. It starts fairly light, then as the book progresses you learn about Sawyer and Elizabeth with their pasts and I can’t help but make that little connection. That’s the best way to describe the progression of this book.

Elizabeth knows all to well what loss means. It has completely stripped her bare. The only person keeping her standing up is her best friend and life line, Todd. Todd’s roommate, Sawyer is an ex-Navy SEAL and he’s fighting his own battles too.

While driving one day, Sawyer stops at a stop light to look over to see a girl singing her heart out. Never did he think he would ever see this girl again. It was an instant attraction between the 2, but as they get to know each other’s past, can they keep each other standing or will they tumble?

I’m completely blown away from this book. I knew it wasn’t a light read, but this book definitely took me by surprise. By the last 100 pages, I LITERALLY could not put the book down. I was completely immersed in this story and had to know what was going to happen next. The way A.M. Johnson writes, it’s just so memorizing, you can’t get enough. You never want to put the book down and you can’t get enough of her writing.

Sawyer and Elizabeth both have pasts that are not pretty at all. The strength that Elizabeth had was unbelievable. To have what happened to her and come out the person she is now is inspiring.

The epilogue destroyed what was left of my already shattered heart. I got teary eyed and cried multiple times while reading. Did I say how beautiful A.M. Johnson writes? I’m serious… You guys need to pick this book up! Then the 2 sequels that are out now. Seriously. SO. GOOD.

I can’t recommend this book enough!

A freak ski accident brings nineteen-year old Mia Kinney within minutes of death. Hurt and scared, Mia is calmed by the southern drawl and clear green eyes of her rescuer.

Twenty-one year old Dylan Blackburn is one of the first Ski Patrol members on the scene. As his patient is airlifted to the local trauma center, he can’t shake her from his thoughts.

As Mia fights for her life, Dylan, is haunted by the blond hair beauty, and knows he needs to make sure she’s going to be okay.

With a troubled past Dylan has vowed never to completely open himself up to another girl, but Mia continues to knock down every wall he’s constructed. When his past arrives at his front door and threatens once again someone that he loves, will Dylan be able to save Mia yet again? Or will he be too late this time?

A story of love, friendship, and the determination to turn a horrible experience into something worthwhile.

what i thoughtI received a finished copy in exchange for an honest review from the author. It does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Mia is one of Bailey’s best friends. She’s spunky, strong, and determined. One day she goes on a skiing trip with her friends and a freak accident happens to Mia almost killing her. If it wasn’t for Dylan and his co-worker just being feet from where she was, she wouldn’t have survived what happened. Dylan has a past he never thought was going to come forth, but Mia continues to break through those barriers he’s put some many years constructing. One day Dylan’s past makes an appearance threatening to take away all that he loves again.

The last 100 pages or so keep you on your toes wanting more and I knew I wouldn’t go to bed not knowing what was going to happen next. Usually I can go to sleep and continue the following day, nope.. Not with this one!! How I managed to stay up that late finishing is beyond me… But this story was just as amazing!

I have no doubt the next book(s) will be just as amazing! I fell hard for Dylan (who wouldn’t!? He has a southern accent– one of the things I like most). ;) From those that have also read this book, say that Dylan is their favorite too. It’s true, you can’t help falling for his character. Especially that dang accent!!! Mia was just awesome. Words cannot describe how amazing and inspiring of a person she was. This is based on a true story, which is discussed at the very end of the book.

The suspense was ON POINT. I seriously could not put this book down. It is crazy just how quickly things can turn for the worst. I’ve never really had the urge to go snowboarding, I’m already not coordinated on just bare land… I cannot tell you how many times I’ve hurt myself.. Trying to snowboard would be scary. But reading this definitely made me more nervous for sure.

Just like book 1, I get giddy thinking about these books; I kid you not. Melissa has become an auto-buy author for me, there isn’t anything I wouldn’t read from her they are just so stinking good!

The love and support that just POURS from these characters is just so incredible, it’s almost unbelievable. These characters have completely stolen my heart (not just Mia and Dylan I mean, but all characters involved at this point).

Guys, if you haven’t read these books yet, I cannot recommend them enough! Not only is the writing gorgeous, but they are quick paced books that you can’t put down no matter how much you try to do so.
