Synopsis

Jordan

This story isn’t about love, like, lust, or a happily ever after. This story, my story, is about struggle, pain and suffering. Fighting to stay afloat while being pulled under by what feels like the murky and powerful undertow of the ocean. Fighting for strength I so desperately need when all I am feeling is desolate and weak. I’m a girl who exudes hatred when a normal girl of my age and pedigree should be the picture perfect portrait of love.

Alcohol consumes me. Drugs numb me. Sex for money feeds the hollow abyss deep within me. How does a soon-to-be twenty-five year old escort turn her life around when the last several years of her life has been spent traveling down a very dark path?

The Shadow

She became my obsession, my every thought. She is the reason I wake up in the morning, plotting, scheming, exacting a revenge she so desperately deserves. But will she take my offer once she learns my true identity; sees the darkness within me, or will she hate me for lying to her all of these years, leading her to lose herself to the drugs and alcohol that have kept her ghosts at bay? Will she be my Precious?

REVIEW:

Okay, wait. What even just happened?! For a second, I thought he was dreaming and couldn’t believe it. I had to reread the last couple chapters a couple times for it to sink in. Wow.
I’m a sucker for dark romance- I’ve been excited for this book since I read the prologue and I think first chapter earlier last year. I’ve been dying to get my hands on it since. If you’re familiar with the Alexa series, then you already know just how heartbreaking T.R.’s writing can be. That shows in this one, but add in the dark elements of romance. I worried it wouldn’t be as dark as I imagined, because for a while it wasn’t. But then the last, maybe 10 chapters it went from a “dark” book, to “pretty freaking dark” quick. After that first chapter, I literally said out loud, “holy crap, wow”.
I’ve only read one other dark book like this (which I won’t mention for fear of spoiling anything) but know it’s a dark book. It doesn’t have a normal ending. I’m trying hard not to give anything away, but take that from this.
I adore T.R.’s writing; I’m excited to see where she will go from here on out with her writing. I’m just in shock from this book mostly and will probably need some time to let this all sink in.

Top Ten Tuesday: Debut Authors Who Have Us Looking Forward To Their Sophomore Novel

top ten tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

finding a waythe mason listhey sunshine

  • Finding A Way by T.E. Black: I recently read this book and I fell in love with it all! This being T.E.’s debut, I’m blown away with her writing. You’d think she’s been a writer a long time and has a bunch of books published… Nope. This is her first and I know in time, her books are only going to get even better. She has become a favorite author of mine even with just reading one book.
  • The Mason List by S.D. Hendrickson: I am buying a paperback copy at some point. This is one of my favorite books this year hands down. This book was a roller coaster of emotions!
  • Hey Sunshine by Tia Giacalone: Romance is ON POINT, characters are perfectly done, plot is SUPERB, EVERYTHING is AH-MAZ-ING!!!! I’m usually not one to re-read books, but this is definitely one of those that I will re-read again. I seriously cannot praise this book enough!

alexa-crushedlove in rewindcaught in the glow

  • Alexa Crushed by T.R. Cupak: This does include a include a love triangle, but in my opinion, it is one you have so many feelings towards. You literally fall for one, get crushed by him, fall for that one then get confused as Alexa is. I don’t know who to root for, Devin or Ethan… Both are swoon-worthy and both have sides that can be easy loved. Devin, the bad boy who is mysterious; Ethan, the sweetheart and best friend.
  • Love in Rewind by Tali Alexander: They have a relationship that I think every girl wants to have. I mean, who wouldnt?! I’m really looking forward to the second book in this series as well as reading more by this author. I may have been born in the 90’s, but I do love 80’s music, so hearing songs thrown into this, just made it even more enjoyable. :)
  • Caught in the Glow by Eva Chase: I’m a hardcore romance addict- that much is true. So it is without a doubt I LOVEDDD the romance between Colin and Avery. I love my bad-boy/rocker types and Colin was just that. I loved his character! Avery’s as well; though at times I just wanted to slap her for taking SOO long. But what can a girl do? 😉

branded 2love letters to the dead

  • Branded by Abi Ketner and Missy Kalicicki: I’m adding Cole to my list of swoon-worthy boyfriends. That boy was just… Wow. Can’t get over him. Probably never will honestly. I loved Cole, I didn’t think I would love him as much as I did. I thought he was just Lexi’s guard and nothing else, nope. Totally wrong. Loved him!
  • Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira: This was such a compelling, beautifully written, and emotional book. There were times I wanted to burst out in tears. There were times where I got a little teary eyed. I liked all the different themes that played a part in this. Mostly the LGBT, you don’t see this very much in young adult books. It’s starting to grow, but still isn’t all that big yet. I adored this aspect! Loved Hannah and Natalie’s relationship that grew in this.

That is all I have for you guys! I’m sure you counted and it’s not 10; its 8. I haven’t read enough debut novels to make this a full list. All authors I have read for the most part have several books out already.

    *****REVIEW*****

    what i thought

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review from the author. It does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Book 2 immediately picks up where the first left off and your STILL confused as to what team you want to join- Ethan or Devin. Even after finishing, I’m still conflicted. It’s literally IMPOSSIBLE to choose a side and with how Cupak drove the book, not only hurt A LOT, but made the decision a little, I guess, easier.

Cupak is a fantastic writer and it’s pretty much impossible not to finish this in one-sitting. I get so engrossed in these books that I completely loose what is going on in the real world and focus on this story. This series is a wild, crazy ride and filled with many tears!

It is now after graduation and Devin and Alexa are starting their lives together. But when Ethan tries to come back into the picture, Alexa is thrown for a loop. She wants to be with Devin, but she can’t ignore her connection to Ethan.

You can’t help but fall in love with both men; they are such opposites of each other. It’s hard not to love them both! That’s why the decision to chose for Alexa is so hard.

Grab yourself (A LOT) of tissues, a blanket and some chocolate- your gonna need it while reading, trust me. But this is so worth the read! I’m obsessed with T.’s writing style and how vivid her story is!

Highly recommended to fans of the new adult genre! This won’t disappoint!

RELEASE DAY BLITZ
October 6, 2015

After her parents died during her senior year of high school, Alexa Morgan is completely alone in the world—except for her best-friend-turned-boyfriend Devin, identical twins Becca and Jessa, and Sebastian, a mysterious associate of her father’s.

Upon graduation, Alexa wants nothing more than to move on with her life, go to college, and forget all the hard and hurtful things from her tragic past. But when her first love, Ethan, shows up on her doorstep—the night before she’s supposed to meet Devin in Miami—it kicks off a whirlwind of events that threatens the good and stable things she’s worked so hard to achieve.

Ethan and Alexa shared one night of passion before he disappeared, leaving her bewildered and confused. But now he’s back, declaring that he loves her and that the only reason he left was to protect her from his malicious stepmother, Olivia.

In her heart, Alexa knows she loves Devin, but her attraction to Ethan is so strong she can’t help but be drawn in by their shared chemistry. Meanwhile, the threat of Olivia lurks around the edges, casting a menacing shadow over everything and everyone Alexa loves.

Although it feels like time has completely stopped it most definitely has not. I am completely oblivious to how long Ethan and I have been standing outside my hotel room when we are startled apart by the sound of a very pissed off, deep, familiar voice.
“What the fuck is going on, Lexi?” Devin’s heated voice booms through the open hallway making me cringe and my body turn to stone at the sound. I’m still partially wrapped up in Ethan’s arms but when I finally detangle myself completely out of his hold, I step to the side of him so I can see Devin. I get a pretty good view of him too since he’s standing only a few feet behind Ethan with hate evident in his normally kind eyes. I know shock is all over my face as I stare at Devin as if he’s just a figment of my imagination. Ethan hasn’t moved a muscle. His back is to his enemy yet he chooses to stay facing me. It takes another few seconds before I finally take notice to what Devin is wearing. He has on running shorts and running shoes. His body is glistening with sweat and his face is red as if he was actually outside running in the Miami heat.
What the hell? My emotions are all over the place. Confused, scared, hurt, happy. I swear on my parent’s urns that Devin was just in bed with the twins. How is he standing here like he was actually out for a run and why can’t I find my damned voice to ask that very question? Suddenly I hear the twins’ door to their room open. I turn my attention behind me just as a random guy, who looks like he could be Devin’s fraternal twin brother or doppelganger, exits the twins’ room. My mind automatically fishes for the memory of my conversation with Jesse. Once I replay what he had said privately plus all of the banter with his buddies, I can see how a drunken person could mistake Mr. Random for Devin. The twins’ guest is wearing gray boardshorts and flips flops and steps out carrying his black T-shirt in his hand. He stops when he sees the three of us standing here. I’m sure we’re quite the sight to see. Me, with red watery eyes and airplane stale clothes, Ethan who has not moved but his irritation is quite evident, and Devin who looks as if he is ready to kill Ethan. The stranger who appears to be very much hung over but oozes sexual satisfaction gives us a half smile, says “Hey” to Devin, and inches past the soon-to-be war zone towards the elevator. It’s usually females you see doing the walk of shame but this morning it’s this wonderful guy, this wonderful guy who isn’t Devin. Shit. Devin.
“Answer me, Alexa.” Devin’s voice is seething and it makes me snap my head back around to face him. I glance briefly at Ethan and I see his eyes are screwed shut, jaw tense, the vein in his neck is pulsing, and his fists are clenched at his sides. Well shit. I can’t explain this because I don’t fully understand it all myself. I look back to Devin who is staring at me with so much anger and hurt that it takes my breath away.
Devin takes two steps closer and Ethan’s eyes snap open. Before either one can do anything I step between both of them. I’ve been in this position once before and just like the last time I have no idea what I could or would do if these two decided to throw down. I take another step towards Devin. He just stares down at me waiting for his answer.
My voice is quiet when I finally speak to him. “Devin, I can explain part of this but I can’t
explain Ethan being here because I don’t have that answer-yet.”
“Do you think I’m fucking stupid, Lexi?” There is so much pain evident in his voice that my tears start to spill again.
“No, Devin. I don’t think you’re stupid. Can we please go into our room and talk privately?” I know I sound pathetic but that’s probably because I am. I just want to be alone with Devin and figure out this craziness.
Just when I think Devin is going to concede and go into our room with me I feel one of Ethan’s hands settle on my hip and that one tiny gesture sends Devin flying over the proverbial edge. Everything happens so fast that all I feel is my body being shoved out of the way like I’m a ragdoll. I trip over my bags and my head slams against a solid surface and everything goes black.

My Reading Stack (#15)

reading stackHey guys! How’s y’alls weekend going? Mine’s been busy with my math class and work, but it’s good! Can’t believe it’s already over! :( Time is seriously flying by even faster!!! So let’s get this started! :D

What I Finished This Week:

a shattered heart alexa loved broken

  • A Shattered Heart by Tiffany King: MY FULL REVIEW IS ALREADY UP- This is condensed, immediately after finishing thoughts…. wow… This book was so much more than I expected it to be! I have been looking forward to Kat’s story since I found out this would be hers. I’m still trying to process my thoughts so I’ll have more on a full review tomorrow on my blog. I recommend this series to the obvious: fans of NA, but also people who are wanting to start out in new adult and not get into all the sex scenes and everything. also someone wanting to start new adult as well as get themselves into darker reads. This series is DEFINITELY not a light read. It’s gut-wrenching, heart-breaking and every other word that can describe heart ache. But, it’s also amazing and Tiffany King is a fantastic writer!!
    • FINAL STAR RATING: ☆☆☆☆☆
  • Alexa Loved by T.R. Cupak: FULL REVIEW WILL BE SHORTLY- Not much after reading because this was a VERY emotional read, but I will say you’ll need 20 boxes of tissues… Though I’m still heart-broken from what happened and I wish it didn’t happen, I loved the end result. My heart has been torn between both Devin and Ethan and the decision wasn’t going to be easy, that was certain… But overall, despite my heart, I still very much enjoyed the ending. I adore T.’s writing and I love both of these books immensely! Definitely pick up, but be warned, you’ll need tissues! ;)
    • FINAL STAR RATING: ☆☆☆☆☆
  • Broken by Annie Jocoby: Full review will be up on my blog later this week. I really enjoyed this story overall, but my biggest problem was Nick. His character and development threw me off and though I liked him, some of his choices put me off. I loved Scotty’s character. I loved her roommate and best friend, Jack. More thoughts on full review. (I just finished this today, so I’m still trying to process my feelings)
      FINAL STAR RATING: ☆☆☆½

What I’m Currently Reading:

Well, to be EXACT, I’m not reading anything at the moment… But these are the ones currently on the “back-burner” at the moment because of review books.

an ember in the ashes after we collided meant for her

I will continue these books when I can knock out a couple more review books. An Ember in the Ashes will probably be the first finished just because I was supposed to read this in September for a book club I’m apart of, but didn’t get to until now.

What’s On My Plate For Next Week:

the hazards of a one night stand caught in the glow full measures

These are my next 3 review books. I will be reading in this order- I’ve already made a list with the order I need to read them in. Most books to review that had/have dates are either later this month or already passed. I do have a test next Sunday, so I’m not sure I’ll finish all 3 of these, but hopefully at least 2 of them for sure! :)

I’ll see you guys next Sunday with what I read!

……. Or my next post. ;)

My Reading Stack (#14)

reading stackThe 2 books I finished this week were AMAZING! All time favorites!!! So let’s get started! :D

What I Finished:

sweet obsession sacrifice

  • Sweet Obsession by J. Daniels: (Click on the picture of the book to view my full review) oh my god. I’ve been dying for Brooke’s book since I read the original 2 Sweet books early this year. At first, I wasn’t a big fan when she was introduced, but she quickly became one of my favorites in Addiction and Possession. I knew her story was going to be tough for her considering her character. I loved when Mason was introduced in Bama Boys. At that point, I already knew he was getting a story so I was already excited. But to see them together in this story combining both series, I adored it. I love that we got to see some of the Bama characters in this! I love how this played out and I will be honest… I wanted to strangle both characters come the 88-90% percent mark. :P
    • FINAL STAR RATING: ☆☆☆☆☆
  • Sacrifice by Adriana Locke: I was sooo close to chunking my Kindle across the room. The last 12% felt like I was on the verge of cardiac arrest. My heart was beating like crazy waiting to see what was going to happen! I love the way it ended – despite almost chunking my Kindle… I didn’t expect to fall in love with this book as much as I did. To the point of this being on my top favorite books of the year. I knew by the 1/3rd mark, it was going to be a favorite. I adored this book so much! I will have more in depth on my review when I have time to process my feelings. My full review will be up on my blog. I’m really looking forward to more of Adriana Locke’s books!!
    • FINAL STAR RATING: ☆☆☆☆☆

What I’m Currently Reading:

a shattered heart after we collided meant for her

A Shattered Heart will be finished after my test today! :D I’m in love with this book so much! Tiffany King has become a favorite author of mine this year! This is now my fourth book by her and I can’t get enough! Both After We Collided and Meant for Her have been put on the back-burner for some time now due to review books. I have been SWAMPED with review books and until I can make a dent in it, these are put on the back-burner. Well, actually Meant for Her IS a review book, but I have a couple books that have specific dates to have read and reviewed by. ;) I’m not that far into it, but so far it hasn’t wowed me enough to want to pick it back up. :( I hope it gets better when I pick it up again; the synopsis sounded promising!

What’s on the Agenda for the Week:

alexa loved broken the hazards of a one night stand

I’m actually going to sit down today after my test to look at what my review books are and if they have a date to review by. If I’m right, these are my next 3 books! Alexa Loved does have a date to be reviewed by and Broken and The Hazards of a One Night Stand don’t. But, they were sent to me quite a while ago and they need to be read and reviewed soon. ;) I’m very excited for all 3 of these books and can’t wait to dive into them! :D

My Reading Stack (#13)

reading stackSo I’ve had a pretty good reading week- I’m reading some awesome books at the moment and I finished some amazing ones as well! :D So let’s start with what I finished during the week…

the moment of letting go when i fall

  • The Moment of Letting Go by J.A. Redmerski: I was really worried come the halfway mark because I felt it wasn’t as good as the Edge of Never. but ohhhh was I wrong in the second half! I adored this book (of course). I loved the meaning behind the book, finding yourself again and letting go. I ADORED this book. I can’t say it’s one of my favorite books for the year, but it’s definitely a solid 5 stars. I originally by the second half was at a 4-4.5 star rating. The second half really hits everything, to the sadness to the happiness. The second half was AH-MAZ-ING! J.A. Redmerski is a very talented writer, this being my 2nd book I’ve read by her. she doesn’t disappoint when it comes to a good romance. She doesn’t dwell on all the sex scenes, but focuses on the real message of the story. That’s one of the reasons why I like her books so much. Definitely recommend!
    • FINAL STAR RATING: ☆☆☆☆☆
  • When I Fall by J. Daniels: ohh dear god… I adore J.’s books so much! I can’t believe I’ve read almost all her books this year! (about to start sweet obsession!) Her books are seriously like drugs, I can’t get enough. Of course Ben tops everyone, but I’m now at the point where I don’t know who is second… Luke or Reed. I adored Beth’s character – but I’m sure all of us book lovers do. ;) I adored their story so much! Theirs is so different from Mia/Ben’s and Luke/Tessa’s! I loved this book to pieces! got teary eyed in several spots; the epilogue destroyed my heart. Because it isn’t already damaged enough! :) love these books, love J. Daniels. Can’t recommend her books enough!
    • FINAL STAR RATING: ☆☆☆☆☆

What I’m Currently Reading:

sacrifice sweet obsession after we collided

I had to put Sacrifice on the back-burner until Sweet Obsession was finished (I’m halfway as I’m writing this post) but it will be finished today and my review will be up tomorrow (Monday). I was contacted by the lovely, J. Daniels earlier this week wanting to see if I’d like to review it for her and of course, I had to. I adore her books and after this book, I will be completely caught up with hers. I adore her writing and the characters she had made! After We Collided is still, unfortunately, on the back-burner. I’m completely swamped with review books at the moment that books like this one have to wait until I’m caught up. Which stinks, because I’ve been dying to continue this book.

On the Agenda for Next Week:

alexa loveda shattered heart broken

The first 2 will be read for sure next week because those have specific dates I need to have them reviewed by. I don’t have a date for Broken, but it is one of my next review books. I had originally planned to read and review this week, but with an unexpected review (Sweet Obsession), I had to throw it on the back-burner until this week. Hopefully I can get to it-I’m really looking forward to it!

Well, that’s all I got this week! See you next week! :)

Despite her lifelong love of literature, Cupak lost touch with her creative side in her early twenties. Her passion for reading was rekindled six years ago, however, and in 2013 she started journaling. This practice helped Cupak hone her creative aspirations, and soon she saw her characters come to life. She has rediscovered her passion for storytelling and wants to share her words with everyone who wants to read them.

Alexa Morgan lost her mother when she was two. At eighteen, her father and stepmother died when a devastating earthquake hit the Bay Area. Only one person has remained a constant in her life: Devin.

Devin has been Alexa’s best friend since childhood. The two are inseparable—or they were until Devin declared his love for her at sixteen. When Alexa can offer him only friendship in return, Devin retreats, brokenhearted.

Alexa, on the other hand, longs for Ethan, the boy next door. Four years older than her, and with an ever-changing roster of girlfriends, Ethan is everything Devin isn’t: wild, sensual, and unpredictable.

In the aftermath of the deadly earthquake, Ethan makes his move on Alexa, who reciprocates in a confused whirl of grief and desire. When Ethan leaves town the next day, Devin comes back into Alexa’s life, offering support and expecting nothing in return.

Alexa begins to see the advantages of Devin’s quiet, stable love. Can she get past the friendship hang-up while trying to forget bad boy Ethan? It’s a choice that will change her life forever.

what i thoughtThis book hurt. It was a roller coaster of emotions and definitely is not a light read.

Alexa has lost all 3 of her parents, her birth-mom, dad and step-mom. Her birth-mom died when she was 2, so she doesn’t have any memories of her. Alexa calls her step-mom her mother. They were extremely close. One day, while Alexa is at the house, Ethan her neighbor who is 4 years older than her shows up and they experience a deadly earthquake. After Ethan makes his move on Alexa, but he flees the next day with no word of where he went or where he’s going. The only person who can help her cope with everything going on in her life is her best friend, Devin who stopped talking to her for 2 years. When Devin starts showing his feelings towards Alexa, she quickly realizes her feelings for him.

I like that we got some back-story and it wasn’t just a chapter or so long. It was a good portion and I enjoyed that aspect. We get to see more of Alexa’s childhood, along with Devin and her parents. You are just waiting for the one moment when everything comes crashing down. I honestly had a very difficult time putting the book down.

Literally this book hurt… T. Cupak is a fantastic author for sure and I’m dying for the sequel. It does leave on a cliffhanger so consider yourself warned. :) But I promise this is one you won’t regret reading!

This does include a include a love triangle, but in my opinion, it is one you have so many feelings towards. You literally fall for one, get crushed by him, fall for that one then get confused as Alexa is. I don’t know who to root for, Devin or Ethan… Both are swoon-worthy and both have sides that can be easy loved. Ethan, the bad boy who is mysterious; Devin, the sweetheart and best friend.

I cannot praise this book enough and even after a week of reading this, I’m still at a lose for words.

“Do you need to blow your nose?” he teases with a slight smile.

“Very funny, but yes,” I say as I snag the shirt from him and proceed to blow my nose with it. The sound that comes out is like a goose honk and is very unladylike.

“Now that right there is sexy,” he says, laughing at me. — Alexa Crushed, T.R. Cupak
